MISSION (IM)POSSIBLE:
OWNING AN EV IN AN APARTMENT
Would you consider owning an EV when living in an apartment? Electric vehicles are getting more and more popular due to the rising oil costs, fast development of technology, and increasing concern for the environment. You can always read how easy and cheap it is to charge your electric vehicle: just plug it in during the night and in the morning you are ready to go.
It is easier said than done for those living in apartments. So should they forget about owning an EV? Certainly not! Here are our solutions to the problem.
What kind of EV are we talking about?
There is a difference between charging an electric car or an electric bicycle. All e-bicycles and most electric motorcycles have removable batteries. This means you can store your two-wheeler in storage and bring your battery to the apartment, where it can be easily plugged into the outlet and re-charged.
Charging large EVs when living in an apartment
For electric cars and large motorcycles you will perhaps need to be a bit more inventive, but do not despair.
Do you own a garage? If you’re one of the few lucky city-dwellers with your own garage with an outlet then you have no problem. Park, plug-in and charge your EV during the night.
If you don’t own a garage or own an EV with a removable battery, we`ll show you some other ways to top-up your electric vehicle.
First, you can check the charging stations in your area through the Apps like PlugShare or Google Maps. Most shopping malls, public parking garages, parking lots, and gas-stations today have at least one charging station. Most of them are free to use. You can park your car or motorcycle when doing your shopping or while at work. Does your office have a private parking lot? Ask your boss if you can charge your EV at work. You can also start an initiative at work for installing a charging station at the lot at your work. It just might go through. You can go a step further and start an EV charging station initiative with your local government. Especially when living in the EU, charging stations can be co-funded with EU funds.
Some cities use lamp-posts next to the parking areas as charging stations. Perhaps this is the case with your town. This kind of solution is easy, cheap, and accessible, since the infrastructure is there, just waiting to be put to use.
So here we are. If there`s a will, there`s a way. Living in an apartment might make owning an EV a bit more complicated, making you more resourceful. But we think this is just one of the charms of owning an electric-fueld-vehicle.
