EV Powertrain

Years ago, after we had made our first e-bike prototype, we decided to try our skill on something different. We took on a project, converting an ICE car into an EV.
We had fun with it, learning along the way about EV powertrains and getting skills that we use today in our work. Ever since we are getting numerous calls and emails requesting conversions of regular cars into EVs.

Even though the conversions of regular bicycles into e-motor assisted bikes are easy, especially now, when numerous affordable and simple conversion kits can be found on the market, converting a car into an EV is a whole different story.

TO DO IT OR NOT TO DO IT?

So, let’s first answer the question: “Do you convert ICE cars into EVs?” And the answer is “No if you are doing it, to save money. Yes, if you would like a custom-made electric powertrain for your vintage or race car.” In the second scenario, be prepared to pay the price.

The cost of conversion, including parts and work, can reach five figures, so you should think carefully what is the reason for converting your vehicle.
If you are doing the conversion, aiming it will lower the cost of your daily commute, then it will be far more cost-efficient to buy a factory-made electric car. In case you are purchasing a new electric car, you can also make use of funding available for green mobility provided by the EU Fonds (in case you live in the European Union, that is).

But if you would like to have a unique electric car for racing or just for showing off, then conversion is the thing for you. Most owners that decide to convert their ICE car into an EV do it either as an engineering project or as a novelty vehicle with an added ecological value. In most cases, they don’t do it to save money on fuel, since the conversion is expensive.

YOU STILL WANT TO CONVERT YOUR CAR? HERE ARE SOME QUICK TIPS…

If you have your heart set on converting your car, we had prepared a list of things you should keep in mind.
As it goes for all EVs, you should pick a light donor-car. In most cases, people decide to convert older models and vintage cars that were lightly-built and have less or no extra electronics. Modern electronics are sometimes hard to be made functional without an “original” engine, which can complicate the process of conversion. As we had mentioned in previous blogs focusing on electric motorcycles, the formula is the same for cars: lesser the weight, better the range.
You should also consider converting a car with the manual transition, rather than the automatic one. The car that you would like to convert should also be in good shape. We are not talking about the motor, since it will be replaced anyway, but about the suspension, steering, and brakes. Electric vehicles have fewer parts to break and wear off compared to ICE cars, so make sure that the shell of the vehicle is in good shape. You wouldn’t want to spend all that money on the conversion, only to find out your car is rusty and falling apart.

LET`S GET OUR HANDS DIRTY

How does the conversion work? It is basically stripping your car of all the ICE parts (engine, fuel tank, muffler, exhaust, starter, and radiator) and replacing them with an electric motor, battery pack, onboard charge unit, and other parts that are necessary for your car to become environment-friendly. There are already some conversion-kits available on the market; some of them are made especially for specific brands. But the process is still too complicated for someone without the knowledge, tools, and skill in mechanics to perform it by him or herself. So if you are an adventurous type and are not afraid of a good DIY project, check out specialized forums and YouTube for tutorials on how to convert your car. The other option is to look for a company near you that is specialized in the EV conversions.
To sum it up: If you have funds, a bit of an adventurous spirit, and you would like to have a unique car that is also gentle to the environment, then give us a call. We are always up to a good challenge! If you are looking for an electric car to save money on fuel, then we suggest you invest in a factory-made electric vehicle.
