Torpedo factory and Torp electric bike

Every product needs a design that is both beautiful and functional. At Torp we had an idea of what we want our new electric bike to look like, we just needed someone to bring our vision to life. After developing the whole powertrain, we wanted the frame of the bike to be light, sleek and sturdy. We had trusted the design of the bike to the young designer Serđo Miletić. Serđo has been experienced in the vehicle design so we knew we will be a good match. We wanted to know a bit more about his design process and his work, so we had sat down with him for a short interview.

Serđo, among other things, you are experienced in vehicle design. Where does your love for cars and motorcycles come from?
Since I was 10 years old I`ve been interested in cars and design. I was spending all of my free time as a kid sketching. Later I had perfected my skill in Photoshop and in software for 3D modeling. I loved spending time drawing and even today I am saving all of my early works.

When designing, what part of the TORP Bike did you pay the most attention to?
My main focus was on the aluminum frame. The biggest challenge was that there should be no curved surfaces. This was limiting on one hand, but it also simplified the whole design at the same time.

What was the main idea behind the design of the TORP Bike?
I wanted to achieve a simple, clean and futuristic aesthetics. To reach my goal I had spent a lot of time researching, making the sketches and designing the 3D model of the bike. Only with extensive research one can create a product that is both beautiful and functional.

What is the difference between designing a motorcycle and a car?
Motorcycles are easier to design because of the fewer surfaces. However, both, cars and motorcycles, take a lot of time for research and for developing the design. So, in the end, it all depends on the complexity of the project.

You have also been awarded for your work. Tell us a bit more about it.
In 2015 I had received the first prize for designing a helmet for NASCAR driver Ben Kennedy. My name and Croatian flag were featured on his car, and he was wearing the helmet with my design on it.
When I was just 14 years old I had received an award for coming up with an add for Citroen Xara Picasso.
