Overcoming Range-Anxiety

When you’re into riding electric dirt-bikes, you are all about “higher, faster, further”! The only question is will your battery let you go as wild as you’d like. Range-anxiety is the most common reason why people avoid buying long-range electric vehicles, like cars, bicycles, and motorcycles. The mare thought of staying without the juice in the middle of nowhere sends shivers down the spine of many. But fear no more: we have prepared some tips on how to reach your point without spending an extra penny.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT THE RANGE

The range of your e-bike depends on a number of factors: from the quality of your battery, terrain, weather, temperature to the built and the weight of the rider. The manufacturer might state that your battery will take you as far as 100 km and it just might be so, but you have to realize that it is a big difference if you drive on a smooth, straight road, or if you climb hills in the woods. We suggest you to always count on a shorter range than stated and determine the actual range of your e-bike after a few rides in different circumstances.

BE PREPARED

Imagine you have to go on an emergency ride or you took your e-bike for a short ride, and end up further than you had imagined. The last thing that should be on your mind during these situations is the juice left in your e-bike. It is smart to charge your bike whenever you can, just to be prepared for sudden situations.

SHORT & STEEP OR LONG & FLAT?

Well, if you are a dirt-bike enthusiast, as we are, then there is no question: short and steep it is! Still, hard terrain drains your battery faster so we suggest either to take a longer and flatter route or to carry a spare battery with you. Just in case. We choose the second option.

HANDLE YOUR TIRES

Tire-pressure can affect greatly the distance you will ride with your e-bike. The common myth is that very high tire pressure leads to less rolling resistance. This is not true for off-road riding. The correct pressure is crucial on the climbs in order to transfer the motor’s power to the ground. Loss of traction and skidding are going to sap your range. Depending on your riding style and weight, we’d recommend 0.9 – 1.3 bar for plus-size tires and 1.6 – 2.0 bar for 2.4″-wide tires. Putting it simply: The lower the tire pressure, the more traction you’ll get and the easier it’ll be to simply roll over bumps on the trail.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MODE

It might not be fun cruising around in an “eco” mode, but you can’t expect the same range while on the “turbo” mode. Adapt your mode to the circumstances, be it the difficulty of the terrain, the length you have to cross or simply to your skill.

MAKE IT OILY

The chain of the e-bike is as important as a chain on a regular bike, so it should be well oiled. Why risk losing power from the motor to the rear wheel just because your chain isn’t running smoothly? A clean and well-oiled drivetrain is essential.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD

As fun it might be, avoid bumping on every rock and root on your path. It is not only for your safety, but riding around the obstacle on the road will also save you juice.

LOOSE THE WEIGHT

As we had stated earlier, the weight of the rider can affect significantly how far will your e-bike take you. We are not suggesting you go on a diet, but to go through your back-pack that you’re taking with you and take out any stuff that you don’t really need. You’ll be surprised what a few items less on your back can do for your range. The one thing we suggest you take with you anyway is your charger. Just in case.

The range of your e-bike depends on a number of factors: from the quality of your battery, terrain, weather, temperature to the built and the weight of the rider.

WHAT IF YOU RUN OUT OF BATTERY?

Even if you follow all the tips above, it can happen that the ride you went on is just too much for your electric two-wheeler. In this case, stay calm and think about what you can do. Is your e-bike paddle-assisted? If so, you can try to ride it to the first house and ask for some power. Does it fit into a taxi? Or maybe just take off the battery, lock your bike so it doesn’t get stolen and go to the nearest place with an electric outlet to charge the battery. Then return to the scene-of-the-crime with topped-up battery and continue driving.
