Have you ever listened to electric vehicles enthusiasts talking among themselves and felt like they speak a whole different language? Have you been looking for some kind of dictionary of electric vehicle phrases? Be it an electric car, bicycle or a scooter, they all have in common specific way of operating and charging and special terminology that comes with it. We don`t want you to feel out-of-place any more, so we prepared a shortlist of the most common terms used in the EV community that will help you with buying your own electric vehicle or to simply fit in with the fast-growing EV-loving crowd. AMP (Ah or kWh ?)

The amount of energy used for the use of the EV.  It’s often measured in Ampere-hour (Ah) but only kilowatt-hour (kWh) will give you the exact capacity. To get kWh you multiply Ampere-hour with a nominal voltage of the battery. This is the reason why battery capacity shouldn’t be declared only with Ah. A fully charged battery of x kWh can deliver x kW for one hour until empty.

Battery

An essential EV component, this is an electric storage unit in which chemical energy is converted into electricity and used as a source of power.

Battery Capacity

The amount of energy used for the use of the motorcycle.  It’s measured in Ampere-hour (Ah) but kilowatt-hour (kWh) is commonly used. The nominal capacity of a battery is the amount of energy that can be withdrawn from it at a particular constant current, starting from a fully charged state. The maximum capacity of a battery is the total amount of energy it contains when fully charged. The battery capacity is not typically given in terms of maximum capacity (this does not refer to real battery capacity).

Charging and Charging Time

Charging is the process of replenishing an electric vehicle’s battery with electricity. For charging the battery you need a charger, which can be either on-board (mounted on the vehicle) or a separate unit.
This is the formula to calculate correctly the charging time according to the battery capacity and the battery power:
kWh battery / kW provided by the charger = h charging

Charger Power

It’s measured in Watts. The higher the Watt’s value, the faster the charge.

Continuous Power/ AMP

Continuous power is power a component in question can safely handle for an indefinite amount of time without damaging or overheating it.
The same applies for continuous AMPs.

EV

Short for “electric vehicle,” it refers to any mode of transportation that uses one or more electric motors powered a rechargeable battery for propulsion. It’s alternatively called BEV, for “battery electric vehicle.”

Lithium-Based Battery

This is a type of high-energy rechargeable battery, used in EVs and other products like laptop computers, that leverages lithium ions as a key component of its electrochemistry.

Peak Power

The peak power is the maximum power that the component in question can sustain for a short time (usually for few seconds, enough for acceleration of the EV) and is sometimes called the peak surge power.
The same applies for peak AMPs.

Range

It refers to the total distance you can travel with full charge. It depends on many factors such as driving style, weather conditions, road type, tire condition…

Torque

Torque is officially defined as the twisting force that causes rotation. It’s the force you feel when you’re pressed into your seat as a vehicle accelerates aggressively. Electric motors deliver 100% of their available torque instantaneously, which enables fast launches and strong passing abilities.

Watt

Watts can be used to measure the instantaneous power output (or input) of the component in question, such as the electric motor on your ebike. The number of watts used by an electric motor equals the voltage supplied by a battery multiplied by the current flowing from the battery to the motor.
